Charles Brooke was the eldest surviving son and heir of Francis Brooke, Esq., and his wife Ann Thompson, daughter and heiress of Samuel Thompson of Ufford Place. Charles was baptised on the 21st June 1765 in Ufford. When Francis Brooke died in 1799 Charles inherited the Ufford estates.
Charles was admitted to Pembroke College, Cambridge on 7th October 1783 at the age of 18. He matriculated in 1784 and achieved a B.A.in 1788 and an M.A. in 1791.
He was ordained as a Deacon at Norwich Cathedral on 18th May 1788 and a priest on 4th April 1790. He was curate of Debenham, Suffolk in 1788.
The Ipswich Journal of 10th April 1790 reported that:
"On Monday last [April 5th] the Rev. Charles Brooke was instituted to the vicarage of Hoxne with the vicarage of Denham annexed, on the presentation of Thomas Maynard, Esq."He resigned from Hoxne in 1794 when Rev. George Clarke Doughty took over as vicar. From the churchwardens accounts 'Rev. C. Browne was the officiating minister by sequestration' on the 26th April 1794.
Charles became Rector of Blaxhall in October 1798.
The Bury and Norwich Post of 20th April 1803 reported that:
"Friday last the Rev. Charles Brooke, M.A., was instituted to the Rectory of Ufford, on the presentation of John Lens, Esq., Serjeant at Law, and the Rev. R. F. Howman"
On 13th December 1809, at Earl Soham, Charles married Miss Charlotte Capper, the daughter of the Rev. F. Capper of Earl Soham.
Charles died on the 30th March 1836, age 70, and was buried at Ufford on April 6th. By this time he had become a Magistrate of the Woodbridge Division.
Charles only son, Francis Capper Brooke, born in 1810, became High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1869. He died in 1886 in Ufford.
